Every new endeavour starts with one pivotal first step, that single step which could set a whole new trajectory for your life. My first step in this blogging adventure was to choose a name that would inspire and challenge me to write from the heart. To fill empty space with words of encouragement and shine a light in the darkness for anyone who might need it, even if the only seeker to ever find it is myself.
“Moments of Melissa” might seem a little – or a lot – narcissistic at first glance, but here is the explanation for a name which helped me put off starting this blog for a good many weeks… Anxiety and panic disorder have been a part of my life since my late teens, but not long ago I hit an all-time low which was so debilitating that I fell into a depressive state on top of having multiple panic attacks daily and constant anxiety. More about this in future posts, but one of the important lessons I had to learn in order to recover, is that our lives are lived moment by moment – not in the past or in the future, but in the here and now. Moments are what matter – savouring them, learning from them and sometimes just enduring them one at a time. As for the Melissa part, I don’t like being the centre of attention in any way, shape or form. This blog however, is something I want to do for myself as much as for anyone who happens upon it and hopefully finds a little warmth and comfort. This journey is my own, to shape and present in any way I choose and not to be bound by the expectations of anyone else. These are my moments, and I’m hoping that by sharing them I will help shape the future moments of others in a positive way.
Who knows where this blog will lead – a journey towards understanding myself, a portal through which I can reach a kind and helping hand, a foundation for new friendships or possibly just a creative outlet which I have lacked up until now.
So here I am, the first step is taken. And once you’re in motion, the next step and the next become easier to take.
